    All Music Guide Review

Mastercuts: Bar Funkin' is two full discs in duration, emphasizing the '70s on the first and the '80s on the second. As usual with these Mastercuts compilations, the tracks are mixed discreetly, just enough to keep the flow going (or just enough to infuriate those who want the tracks in whole, with no blends whatsoever). Their approach is as admirable as ever, taking both classics and rarities into equal consideration. They prioritize making an entertaining, enjoyable-from-start-to-finish listen, and the results are mostly pleasing. On the first disc, Machine's message-oriented disco classic "There but for the Grace of God Go I" is surrounded by the likes of Gil Scott-Heron's "The Bottle," Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up," Booker T. & the MG's' "Melting Pot," and Funkadelic's "(Not Just) Knee Deep." The second disc features plenty of '80s club favorites, such as Indeep's "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life," Imagination's "Just an Illusion," Shannon's "Let the Music Play," D Train's "You're the One for Me," and Jocelyn Brown's "Somebody Else's Guy." ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
