Two Merzbow double-disc remix projects were released in 2003, one around the Important Records release Amlux and this one based on the 2001 Misanthropic Agenda LP Frog (a two-CD, expanded reissue came out under the title Frog+ in early 2003, but for the remix project the artists worked only with the music from the LP). And if you are a fan of Masami Akita's work and need to choose between the two, go for Merzbow Frog Remixed and Revisited. Why? Because it sticks closer to noise music (which is probably why you are here anyway) and offers higher listening pleasure despite the fact that it is harsher. There are only 15 tracks spread across the two hourlong discs, which means the artists get a chance to stretch out, and they form a more coherent whole, without trading on diversity -- but you do get fewer big underground names for your buck. Hrvatski opens disc one with a lightly ambient/concrète work. Highlights include Pita's rough-edged "Merzfrog473," Sunn0)))'s growling, menacing reworking of "Catch 22," and Merzbow's very own 15-minute self-expansion, "Frog Variation 2," by itself more interesting than the disc's worth of extra material on Frog+. Disc two starts with some of Fennesz's harshest sounds ever (and still they retain that dreamy quality that makes him special). The presence of fringe Nordic black metal groups Ulver and When comes as a surprise, but they do a fine job, especially Ulver, whose "Denki No Numa" ranks as the most entertaining track. Stone/drone rockers Boris close the set with nothing less than 20 minutes of loud, roaring bass guitar and splashing drums backed by a chorus of Merzbow-ified croakers -- not your casual evening by the pond. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide
