    All Music Guide Review

This essentially is a chance for the Narada label to get more mileage from its Indian-inflected artists and (more kindly) to introduce some Sheila Chandra fans to some newer acts in a not-dissimilar mold. With one-quarter of the 16 tracks, Chandra is definitely -- and justifiably -- the main attraction here, although rising star Susheela Raman warrants three cuts with her mix of Indian and world sounds. She has already won critical respect, although in comparison her work comes off as relatively unimaginative next to Chandra. The excellent Axiom of Choice also gets three outings, its sound spreading a little more toward the Middle East, perhaps, but quite enthralling, and Vas gets two, while everyone else is limited to just one brief exposure -- which in the case of the Dhol Foundation is a shame, as it has plenty to offer. In many ways, Narada diluted what power this compilation might have had with its geographical reach that stretches from India to the Middle East (as in Omar Faruk Tekbilek and Jesse Cook's flamenco hints). The music is fine, but the concept seems to be a little lost. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide
