One of the several multi-volume Salsoul series, 12" Gold Master Series compiles "unreleased, rare, and hard-to-get" mixes of singles released on the great disco label. The first volume, released in 1994, maintains a good balance between familiar and not-so-familiar cuts, and the mixes don't often deviate much from the versions that are most popular. Highlights: previously unreleased versions of Surface's "Falling in Love" and First Choice's "Dr. Love," the 12" mix of Moment of Truth's "Helplessly." Keep in mind that plenty of Salsoul compilations have been released since the mid-'90s, so the rarities might not be so hard to come by anymore. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
