    All Music Guide Review

Then: Totally Oldies, Vol. 6 carries on in the tradition of the first five volumes of the Then series by compiling a seemingly random selection of hits from an era, in this case the '70s, linked only by their popularity. This volume also carries on the tradition of providing a good deal for the money (lots of tracks, superior sound quality, decent liner notes) and being a lot of fun. The selections vary from the AOR of Boston's "More Than a Feeling" to the nasty funk of King Floyd's "Groove Me" and the folk/pop of Richie Havens' "Here Comes the Sun" to the drama pop of Bonnie Tyler's "It's a Heartache," the dorky psych-pop of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky," and the soft rock of Henry Gross' "Shannon." The collection also throws in a few odd choices to keep listeners on their toes. Blue Haze's bubblegum reggae meets vaudeville take on the pop chestnut "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" wasn't a big hit, but it certainly deserves to be taken out of mothballs. As does the New Seekers hilariously earnest and over-orchestrated version of the Who's "Pinball Wizard (See Me Feel Me)," the Blackbyrds' soft-disco "Walking in Rhythm," and Neil Sedaka's duet with Elton John on the funky "Bad Blood." Fans of '70s music will be glad to have a collection that mixes up the obvious hits with some well-placed rarities. It is just like listening to a good radio station minus the commercials for Tab and the Buick LaSabre. ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide
