Before and after Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Primus is an entirely different band. Well almost. While Les Claypool's oddball and quirky sense of humor has remained intact throughout it all, the trio transformed musically over the years. Early on, it appeared as though Primus was more about songwriting, before later reinventing itself as a Grateful Dead-worshipping outfit that loved to put jamming before songwriting. On the CD/DVD double-disc Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People, the classic Claypool/Larry LaLonde/Tim Alexander lineup has been reunited for five new tracks. Fans hoping that Primus would return to streamlined songs will be disappointed, as the band has picked up right where it left off -- with three of the five tracks stretching past six minutes. The shorter tracks fare better, including "Pilcher's Squad," a song about a notorious London police detective who used to bust rock musicians in the '60s, before he was convicted of planting evidence. While hardcore fans will want to hear what Claypool and the boys have been up to lately in the recording studio, the main attraction of Animals is its exceptional DVD. Included are all of Primus' promo videos (including great and imaginative clips for "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver," "Tommy the Cat," and "My Name Is Mud"), as well as the 1992 Cheesy Home Video and live clips from throughout the group's career. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

DVD and CD combo:
The folks at Zoltron (in conjunction with the band) have pulled out all of the stops to create a comprehensive 3+ hour DVD that will satisfy the most hardcore fans. It compiles all 12 of the Primus videos, including the rarely seen "Too Many Puppies" clip directed by Kevin Kerslake, the stop-motion animation classic "Southbound Pachyderm," and the innovative "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver."
Also included are the award winning short animated film "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" and the out of print 1992 home video release "Cheesy Home Video." The DVD has short documentaries on the making of "Mr. Krinkle" and "Wynona's" as well as "The Making of the Brown Album (Back In Brown)," which have never been seen before.
Live performances on the DVD cover every single era of the band's career, from a 1989 college radio appearance, to Woodstock '94, to latter day shows with Brain (just to name a few). A rarities section even includes pre-Ler and Tim performances from the eighties with first guitarist Todd Huth, and drummers Jay Lane and Tim "Curveball" Wright.
And if that wasn't enough, there is still more: backstage footage, discography, a Primus photo gallery and more.
The CD:
In June, three old friends reconvened at Rancho Relaxo and recorded 5 new songs. Some of these musical ideas were generated in May in LA, when Les Claypool, Larry Lalonde and Tim Alexander (don't call him "Herb") first got back together and spent 3 days jamming, testing the waters, feeling each other out and working on new jams.
Listen to audio clips of the new songs:
1. The Carpenter And The Dainty Bride
2. Pilcher's Squad
3. Mary The Ice Cube
4. The Last Superpower aka Rapscallion
5. My Friend Fats
