    All Music Guide Review

The soundtrack for the Coen Brothers' romantic comedy Intolerable Cruelty features a witty array of pop songs and excerpts from Carter Burwell's equally witty score. Bookended by two versions of "The Boxer" -- Simon & Garfunkel's own bittersweet rendition and Colin Linden's more ragged reading -- the collection features several more apt songs for this battle of wills between the sexes, including Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds," Big Bill Broonzy's "Glory of Love," and Edith Piaf's "Non Je Ne Regret Rein." Meanwhile, Burwell's score is varying degrees of romantic and comedy, ranging from the brassy "Intolerable Mambo" and the increasingly frantic "Hanky Panky Choo Choo" to the hyper-romantic "Heather 2 Honeymoon" -- which sounds like Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" played like a wedding march -- and the lush "Love Is Good." "No More Working," a slinky, shifting track, may be the most typically Burwellian track here, but the best may be "You Fascinate Me," a swelling, string-driven piece that manages to be affecting without being syrupy. While this soundtrack isn't likely to become as iconic as the surprise hit O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Intolerable Cruelty, much like the movie it supports, is a stylized and perfected romantic comedy soundtrack. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
