    All Music Guide Review

Slow Jams, Vol. 2 is better than the volume that preceded it. Playing it close to the vest, Slow Jams, Vol. 1 offered the hits and zero surprises. Slow Jams, Vol. 2 has a few more songs that continued to be radio staples of the R&B genre rather than pop successes. That's not to say this is full of obscure favorites. Early-'70s ubiquitous tracks -- including Blue Magic's always-compelling "Sideshow," Al Green's "I'm Still in Love With You," and the Delfonics' "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)" -- make up the core of the CD. Despite those great songs, the best of Slow Jams, Vol. 2 are the ones that don't always make like-minded sets. The Commodores' "Zoom," the Manhattans' "There's No Me Without You," and Phyllis Hyman's beautiful cover of the Spinners' "I Don't Want to Lose You" are even closer to the inherent slow jams' romantic properties. The sequencing is great here and "Brandy," "Have You Seen Her," and "Misty Blue" all make for a great set of weepy songs. Like the earlier volume, Slow Jams, Vol. 2 could be more extensive. A couple of truly rare songs wouldn't have hurt here either. ~ Jason Elias, All Music Guide
