If only this were an anthology covering Phil Upchurch's entire career instead of just his tenure with Go Jazz. But then it would have to be a box set. Anthology covers representatively the kind of groove-based smooth jazz Upchurch recorded for the Motown subsidiary. It is loaded with vocalists from Oscar Brown and Chaka Khan to Jevetta Steele. While fans of the classic recordings like Darkness, Darkness may not go for this, fans of solid groove will. Seamless, warm, and tasty licks, beautiful singing, and snappy tunes make this a decent comp. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
