    All Music Guide Review

The word "smooth" can denote the absence of lumps or rough edges; it might refer to hairlessness or oiliness; "smooth" could mean peaceful, polite, friendly and ingratiating, or simply level surfaced and steady flowing. Any of these terms could be applied to music, even allowing for the notion that maybe what this world really needs is a special genre designation for music that suggests the absence of hair. More to the point: "smooth jazz" is a late 20th and early 21st century term for a slick, polished and unobtrusive extension of fusion. Living Era's 2003 double-disc compilation Smo-o-oth Vintage Jazz: 1935-1952 gets its title from a recording cut in 1941 by the Benny Goodman Sextet; here the word "smooth" exists as a counterpart to "cool," another term that took on extra connotations when an entire School of Cool emerged before and during the Korean War. Smoothness and coolness, of course, had always existed in jazz, and may be savored in the slower rags of Scott Joplin. For general everyday use, this compilation represents an overview of relaxing, accessible jazz recorded between the years 1935 and 1952. The average duration of three minutes allowed for the inclusion of no less than 48 tracks. The balance between vocals and instrumentals is beautifully achieved; a gentle non-linear progress traces a web of cross-pollinations from Coleman Hawkins and Benny Goodman to Charlie Parker and Stan Getz; from Sidney Bechet and Django Reinhardt to Lester Young and Gerry Mulligan; from Johnny Hodges, Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw to Count Basie, John Kirby, Earl Hines, Flip Phillips and George Shearing; from Connee Boswell, Billie Holiday, Ivie Anderson and Lee Wiley to Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan and the Ella Fitzgerald/Louis Armstrong duo. This marvelously well-stocked sampler will be ideal both as a tool for introducing jazz into daily life and for studying the stylistic evolution of this great music during the early to mid-20th century. ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide
