The soundtrack to the late-'60s British youth movie Bronco Bullfrog had music by Audience, an idiosyncratic group then just starting its recording career. This CD combines Audience songs with spoken dialog from the film, with instrumental Audience music sometimes heard behind the dialog sections. Though according to the cover this CD features "the original musical score by Audience plus additional songs from the 1969 recording sessions," it's not clear from the track listings which material comes from the musical score and which from the additional sessions. Anyway, the music portions are interesting late-'60s underground British rock with heavy jazz and soul overtones. They're rather like a less commercial Traffic with more angst, perhaps with a little Jethro Tull and Move around the edges, making greater use of saxophone (and some flute) than most rock bands of the era did. As Bronco Bullfrog has sometimes been described as a film about East London mods, it's a little bit of a surprise that the accompanying music had such underground artiness, but not an unwelcome one. Too, the music has a tense vibe that seems to fit the bleak, uncertain mood of the movie well, though as often happens with these kind of soundtrack albums, the alternation of studio-recorded music with film dialog makes for awkward, discontinuous listening. Some of the Audience songs also appear on Audience's debut LP, though again it's unfortunate that the liner notes don't make it clear which Audience cuts might have been unique to this soundtrack. The CD also includes the film trailer as an enhanced bonus track. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
