Lyrics from Roots of Rock (Acrobat)

    All Music Guide Review

These tracks aren't so much the roots of rock as they are a set of country blues sides recorded in the 1920s, '30s and '40s that were later successfully covered by various rock groups and performers, including Skip James' "I'm So Glad," Charley Patton's "A Spoonful Blues," Robert Johnson's "Cross Roads Blues," Kokomo Arnold's "Milk Cow Blues," and the Mississippi Sheiks' "Sitting on Top of the World." There is little doubt that rock draws heavily on the blues as part of its makeup, but there is much more to the stew than that one ingredient (country and gospel come immediately to mind), and calling this set the "roots of rock" is a bit of a stretch. It is, however, a nice collection of classic country blues pieces. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
