All Music Guide Review
This two-disc set from Sony International collects covers of pop hits by, at times, the most unlikely of artists. Among the unforgettable interpretations here are All Seeing I's laconic version of Sonny & Cher's "The Beat Goes On," Ministry's industrial muscle-bound take on Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay," the Butthole Surfers' mostly reverent rendering of Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man," the Ramones' straight-ahead retelling of the Who's "Substitute," and the Presidents of the U.S.A.'s reconfiguration of "Video Killed the Radio Star," originally done by the Buggles. Also included in this set is the infamous version of "My Way" by Sid Vicious that manages to make a train wreck sound musical, if not fascinating. Most of the covers here are at least interesting, drawing their primary appeal and energy from the original versions, but seldom surpassing them. The exception is Jeff Buckley's intimate and emotional cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," which manages to make a great song sound like it was sung by an angel. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
