Kelley Polar

The underground success of the Metro Area full-length didn't prevent the first Kelley Polar Quartet 12" from attaining its own warm reception in 2002, a case solidified by appearances on 2003 mix albums from both Chicken Lips and Bent. For Recital, the quartet delivers a pair of excellent modern boogie tracks that simultaneously soothe and stimulate. "The Rhythm Touch" would've been effective enough as an instrumental, but dual vocals from Heather Pelletier and Mike Kelley add another welcomed dimension, complementing the graceful string arrangement rather than overshadowing it. On the B-side, "Castrovalva (Le Chant Sans Nuances)" lives up to the group's name, with a Jack Frost bassline nipping at your hip. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
