All Music Guide Review
Released in 2004 to coincide with St. Patrick's Day, Greatest Irish Bands accounts for most of the usual suspects, though often with their highest-profile songs (most of which disregard their Irish roots). The Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" and Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey in the Jar" do show a connection to these bands' distinctive homeland music, though the already over-anthologized "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison is a song that reveals nothing of Morrison's Belfast influences. It is encouraging to see relatively obscure '80s punkers the Undertones and Stiff Little Fingers receive exposure, but an enclosed free DVD wastes some of its potential by including only a short but sweet indie film, Sightings of Bono. ~ Hal Horowitz, All Music Guide
