NELSON MANDELA AIDS CONCERT: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM

    All Music Guide Review

On November 29, 2003, former Eurythmic Dave Stewart and former Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor held a benefit concert in Cape Town, South Africa, to kick off Nelson Mandela's AIDS awareness campaign, named 46664 after his prisoner number. Of the three discs that document the concert, Long Walk to Freedom is the earthiest. The three huge, Mandela-centric numbers that kick off the disc are great, but could have benefited from being spread out. Angélique Kidjo rocks every single one of the 40,000 audience members with her powerful "Afrika," Jimmy Cliff gives one of his most serene performances of "Many Rivers to Cross," and the influence of the crowd slowly changes Ladysmith Black Mambazo's "Homeless" from melancholy to uplifting. Besides being the most cohesive of the three discs, Long Walk to Freedom is also the set's most empowering collection. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide
