    All Music Guide Review

Despite its rather generic name, Rhino's Women & Songs is an A-list affair, collecting songs from female singers and singer/songwriters, including Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me," LeAnn Rimes' "How Do I Live," and Sarah McLachlan's "Adia." Some of the song choices are disappointingly pedestrian: Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" and Faith Hill's "Cry" have already had plenty of exposure, and Cher's "Believe" has been worn into the ground. Nevertheless, the compilation does a pretty good job of balancing different flavors of mainstream pop and rock by women, offering urban sounds with Alicia Keys' "A Woman's Worth" and Toni Braxton's "Un-Break My Heart," the adult alternative pop of Dido's "Thank You" and Alanis Morissette's "Thank U," and the slightly more rock-oriented style of Lisa Marie Presley's "Lights Out" and Cherie's "I'm Ready." Rachael Yamagata, Heather Headley, Michelle Branch, Faith Hill, and Kelly Clarkson are some of the other female stars included on Women & Songs. Even though the album isn't as far-reaching or creative as it could've been -- and it's far from "a collection of the greatest female artists today," as the liner notes promise -- at least it can't be faulted for not delivering what its title promises. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
