Lyrics from Salsoul Presents: Disco Funk Flavas
All Music Guide Review
A U.K.-based company called Suss'd, run by Ian "Mastercuts" Dewhurst, got hold of the Salsoul label's catalog and went hog wild with the repressed singles and CD compilations. Disco-Funk Flavas is part of a flurry of themed compilations. This is, perhaps, the most obvious one of them all -- Salsoul being synonymous with disco-funk during its heyday. This 23-track, two-disc set contains plenty of cuts that have been on plenty of other disco compilations, but the label's catalog is deep enough that it can sustain another release like this without recycling too much. For anyone who owns more than a couple all-Salsoul discs, this will be redundant, and it's nowhere close to being definitive (to be fair, Suss'd couldn't have been aiming that high here). Highlights include Salsoul Orchestra's "Getaway," Edwin Birdsong's oft-sampled "Rapper Dapper Snapper," Barbara Joyce's "Do It Til You're Satisfied," and Skyy's "Call Me." ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
