    All Music Guide Review

The Hard Rock Cafe, the world's largest rock & roll theme restaurant chain, entered a partnership with Rhino Records in 1997, presumably to release various-artists compilations like Classic Rock and its companion New Wave. Each collection captures a specific era -- namely, the '70s and '80s -- by rounding up 16 radio hits. While neither offers any surprises, each is a good collection of familiar material. Classic Rock contains a few weak cuts -- Sugarloaf's "Green-Eyed Lady" didn't need to be here, while "Cold As Ice" isn't the definitive Foreigner song -- but nevertheless offers such classics as "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," "Maggie May," "Born to Be Wild," "Slow Ride," "Show Me the Way," "Black Magic Woman," "Smoke on the Water" and "Free Bird," making it a good disc for casual classic rock fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
