Shine is a retitled, relaunched version of Meredith Brooks' 2002 album Bad Bad One. That record made little impression upon its May release that year, apart from the single "Shine" sneaking onto the lower reaches of the Adult Top 40 charts, and the album sat dormant for nearly two years, when, out of nowhere, the popular television therapist Dr. Phil adopted the song as his new theme song for his new fall season. So, Bad Bad One was re-released on Kissing Booth/SLG under the new title Shine. The title was moved to the pole position and the rest of the album was shuffled around, with the new "Dr. Phil Remix" -- which is not only a remix, but an edit, clocking in at well under two minutes -- added to the end of the record. For listeners who were won over to Brooks through the Dr. Phil show, this is clearly the way to go, but anybody who already owns Bad Bad One will find this superfluous. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
