Bryan Loren

Bryan Loren isn't a knockout singer, but what he lacks in vocal strength he makes up for in mood and style. This self-penned, produced, arranged, and mixed 1984 debut set is consistent in its easygoing approach to smooth urban contemporary sounds. Though the tracks occasionally blend a bit too much into each other, it is ultimately the thematic scheme of songs like "Easier Said Than Done" and "Do You Really Love Me" that holds things together. Loren doesn't strive to include Prince-like gimmicks or other fanciful things to make his music catchier. Rather, he relies on simple, funk-laced R&B arrangements and impressive chord progressions embellished with pleasing, atypical tensions. The songs' steady mid-tempo pace, as well as Loren's understated vocals and peaceful production, make the album a romantic, ideal listen for quiet storm fans.
