Cedar Walton

This CD was recorded live at the late, lamented Sweet Basil club in New York City, which gives it that special naturalistic energy. It also helps that this is a trio who swings crisp and hard. From the opener -- a rousing version of "My Heart Stood Still" where everyone gets to solo -- the music continues at a consistently high level and brisk pace, slowing down slightly for a fond ballad reading of "Skylark." Cedar Walton is a strong, authoritative, melodic player, who is supported here by a warm and propulsive David WIlliams on bass and Billy Higgins on drums, who manages to be both subtle and intense at the same time. Walton is also a fine composer, as demonstrated here by his lovely jazz waltz "Clockwise," the witty "Blues for Myself," and the exotic "Turquoise," which is one of the CD's highlights. Others include the title track, where Walton pays tribute to Ahmad Jamal's bold chordal approach while making his own comments; a swinging version of the rarely heard "High Wire" by Chick Corea featuring Higgins' fine brushwork; and the quirky closer "The Theme." A varied and enjoyable collection, best for those who enjoy the intimate exchange of a well-seasoned trio. ~ Judith Schlesinger, All Music Guide
