It comes as a bit of a surprise that "Santa Dog," the first controversial Residents release, is nowhere to be found on this anthology, especially when one considers the amount of space granted a discussion of the song in the liner notes. Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Huddled Masses is otherwise as good a Residents overview as can be expected this side of a hyper-expensive four-CD box, including a number of cuts making their album (and CD) debut. One approach taken to the problem of selecting choice album cuts is given a full airing here -- condense the entire record to approximately ten minutes (achieved with The Commercial Album by means of selecting ten cuts). While not the most satisfying solution for dedicated listeners, each "concentrate" has a certain appeal, and might well serve to introduce neophyte listeners to the many aspects of the Residents. Perhaps not. In the surreal world of the Residents, it doesn't really matter -- the point lies more in the deconstruction-reconstruction of their own history. Typically, this approach starts at the present and finishes somewhere in the vicinity of the beginning. Well, it worked for Merlin, and it should work for these masters of the arcane. It's simply a pity that the Great Box Set approach has yet to be tried. ~ Steven McDonald, All Music Guide
