Five of Los Angeles' top jazz musicians come together for this modernized look at Yuletide favorites. "Snowfall" is given chord changes worthy of "Giant Steps," the "Little Drummer Boy" is turned into a tribute to Elvin Jones, and additional minor and modal chords often make the usually joyous music sound melancholy while still swinging hard. Rather than simplify their own way of playing, the musicians alter the music to fit their styles while not discarding the melodies. There are many fine solos along the way, particularly from pianist Bill Cunliffe, trumpeter Clay Jenkins and guitarist Larry Koonse. A fine set of post-bop Christmas jazz. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
