All Music Guide Review
Despite being weighted down by some silly, dated material, Hip-O's Rock for the Ages is a good collection of 14 hard rock songs from the '70s, plus a couple of ringers from the '80s. Montrose ("Bad Motor Scooter"), the Outlaws ("Green Grass and High Tides") and Pat Travers ("Snortin' Whiskey") all sound tied to their era; for some listeners, they may detract from the momentum of the collection, since they're not classic rock staples like Boston ("More Than a Feeling"), Lynyrd Skynyrd ("That Smell"), Free ("All Right Now"), Ted Nugent ("Cat Scratch Fever"), Blue Oyster Cult ("(Don't Fear) the Reaper"), Jethro Tull ("Locomotive Breath"), Foghat ("Slow Ride") and Joe Walsh ("Rocky Mountain Way"). The '80s cuts -- Ratt's excellent "Round and Round," Whitesnake's Zeppelin ripoff "Still of the Night," and Gary Moore's "Still Got the Blues (For You)" -- don't quite fit in with the crowd either, but at least those are solid songs. Despite thee minor complaints, Rock for the Ages remains an entertaining collection, provided that you haven't heard these songs countless times before on classic rock stations. Then again, if you wanted to re-create a classic rock broadcast in your own home, you could do much, much worse than this disc. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
