Submit Your ReviewOne of four Hep sets taken from Slim Gaillard's live performances of the 1945-51 period, this album has some truly crazy ad-libbing and stretching out, plus some fine jazz. The "Avocado Seed Soup Symphony," "Yep Roc Heresay," "Matzoh Balls" and "Operatic Aria" feature Gaillard, bassist/vocalist Bam Brown, and drummer Leo Watson at their nuttiest; they are assisted on some songs by altoist Jack McVea, trumpeter Karl George, trombonist Vic Dickenson and pianist Fletcher Smith. Pianist/singer Harry "The Hipster" Gibson drops by to perform his classic "Hey Stop That Dancing Up There," and "September In the Rain" is a straightforward jam by Gaillard with the Jubilee All-Stars (including cornetist Bobby Hackett, Dickenson and altoist Willie Smith). A well-rounded if eccentric set, recommended to listeners open to jive talk of the mid-'40s era. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
