Altoist Gigi Gryce and trumpeter Donald Byrd were not able to keep their colorful hard bop quintet together for long, but in 1957, they did record several worthy albums. With pianist Hank Jones, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor forming a solid rhythm section on this LP, the groups plays mostly obscure songs by Lee Sears, Ray Bryant, Jones and Byrd, along with surprisingly just one by Gryce ("Capri"). The overall results give fresh life to 1950s straight-ahead jazz, although the short life of this group kept it from ever being influential. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
