The In tha Beginning project seems like a good idea in theory. Take some of the greatest hip-hop singles from the '80s, have some hot '90s stars record new versions, then release companion albums, one containing the originals, the other the covers. It's an excellent marketing scheme that has one major flaw -- there's no way that the new versions could match the originals. After all, N.W.A.'s "Dopeman" and "Fuck tha Police," Ice-T's "6 in the Mornin'," Doug E. Fresh's "The Show," BDP's "I'm Still #1," Biz Markie's "Make the Music With Your Mouth," LL Cool J's "Big Ole Butt," EPMD's "Knick Knack Patty Wack," and Rock Master Scott's "The Roof Is on Fire" are all seminal singles in their own way, showcasing some of the greatest musical and lyrical talents of their time. Which means, of course, that In tha Beginning...Tha Originals is a great listen, since it contains 12 timeless tunes. There are better hip-hop comps, of course, but this is still a great primer in the roots of hardcore hip-hop. [In tha Beginning...Tha Originals is also available in a "clean" version, with all obscenities stripped off the recordings.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
