While the 1987 modern-day Western Extreme Prejudice remains justly forgotten, Jerry Goldsmith's score certainly deserves the second look afforded by La-La Land's 2005 special edition. Seamlessly fusing strings and synthesizers, the music is at once traditional and contemporary, its visceral intensity sharply capturing the film's emphasis on action. Goldsmith also pays particular attention to the film's Texas setting, culminating in the Latin-inspired climax "To Mexico." The expanded edition contains a wealth of previously unreleased material, including "The Plan," a stirring orchestral sequence deemed too lavish by director Walter Hill. Goldsmith aficionados will nevertheless savor its scope and complexity. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
