Trax Records: Twilight Trax, one of the several mix compilations released in 2004 by Chicago's Trax (via a deal with Casablanca), is less intense than its sister releases, relying less on suffocatingly dense tracks like Adonis' "No Way Back" and more on relatively spacious ones like Mr. Fingers' "Can You Feel It." Unfortunately, the mix is also heavier on later Trax releases, most of which are borderline drab -- with more "musical" (i.e. deep!!!) elements, basically, which don't rate with the spirited rawness of the label's early catalog. Since Trax found so many ways to rearrange their discography for these releases, there's plenty of overlap here with the other compilations, including Mr. Fingers' "Can You Feel It" and Virgo 4's "In a Vision"; to offset that, two welcomed selections you won't hear often (or anywhere else) are Master C & J's "Make You Happy" (a previously unreleased track) and Ron Hardy's "Liquid Love." The original generation of Chicago clubbers who grew up listening to house might also have a problem with the fact that a young outsider (Toronto-based DJ Steve Yanko, who also remastered a good chunk of the label's old releases), rather than a seasoned Windy City native, performed this live mix. Again, Trax Records: 20th Anniversary Collection is the place to begin, though this is not a bad way to augment your house collection. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
