    All Music Guide Review

Hal Lifson, author of -1966! The Coolest Year in Pop Culture History has assembled a singular collection of tracks from the annals of that fabled decade. Sex and the '60s juxtaposes classic singles, television commercials, rarities, exploitation movie promos, and soundtrack cuts in a wonderfully kitschy yet focused set that provides more than an hour of indulgent, gloriously hedonistic listening pleasure. Some of the classics include the 45 version of Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger" theme, Sandie Shaw's "Girl Don't Come," Jackie DeShannon's "Come and Stay With Me," Nancy Sinatra's "How Does That Grab You Darlin'," Cilla Black's theme from "Alfie," and Ann Margaret's "The Swinger." Twiggy's innocently seductive "Over and Over" is here, as is Donna Loren's "Love's a Secret Weapon." The commercials really get it: "Edie Adams," "Hey Big Spender," "Take It Off! Take It All Off!" from the Noxema Shaving Cream spot, and Barbara Feldon's self-promotion single "99" from the Get Smart album. Bob Crewe enters twice with "Music to Watch Girls By" and the "Barbarella Theme," as do the Turtles with the set's only throwaway cut in "Guide for the Married Man," from the film of the same name. This is a hip little item to have in any collection. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
