Lyrics from Funk Ballads
All Music Guide Review
To some the term "funk ballads" may seem an oxymoron -- after all, isn't funk supposed to be uptempo dance music? -- but if the disco, funk and quiet storm ballads on Funk Ballads are anything to judge by, it's term that makes some sense. It basically stands for smooth, slow numbers by soul, R&B, funk and disco artists in the late '70s -- essentially, it's the roots of what became known as quiet storm. Although the album isn't definitive, since it draws from only one label, the entertaining Funk Ballads captures its era well, featuring hits by Love Unlimited Orchestra ("Midnight and You"), Cameo ("Why Have I Lost You"), Gap Band ("Yearning for Your Love"), Marvin Gaye ("Distant Lover"), Smokey Robinson ("Quiet Storm") and Rose Royce ("Love Don't Live Here Anymore"), among many others. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
