One Scene to Another: Plumline Record's Tribute to Canadian Indie Rock is a really cool idea for a tribute record. Instead of a single artist, the disc salutes an entire scene and does it up right. Sometimes it isn't all that clear to the listener if the bands involved in tribute discs are all that inspired by the band they are covering or whether they agreed to do the covers just to be on a CD, especially when you are looking at discs like this one where the bands aren't big names. Or even names at all. That thought is dispelled about a third of the way through since each band is totally committed to their source material. From the sound of it, '90s Canada was like a beacon to this crop of young Detroit bands. Maybe it was due to the Canadian rock stations having to fulfill their quota of Canadian acts. More likely it was due to how great bands like Sloan, Eric's Trip, Jale, Zumpano and the Super Friendz were. Whatever the reason, One Scene to Another is a 16-track love letter filled with totally reverent renditions of some wonderful indie rock. Highlights are New Grenada's spunky cover of Eric's Trip's "Smother," the Mood Elevator's, well, moody, version of Sloan's "Money City Maniacs," Spy Island's dramatic and swirling version of Jale's "Ali," the Pop Project's quirky, new wave-styled romp through Zumpano's "The Only Reason Under the Sun" and Fire Engine Red's take on Hayden's "You Are All I Have." The only group that gets the bum's rush is Thrush Hermit; the two covers of their songs (a clattering "At My Expense" by I Choose Nebraska and a silly electro pop "French Inhale" by W-Vibe) are the least interesting on the disc. The rest are given the royal treatment and create the perfect tribute record effect. You'll be digging the originals out of your collection or hunting them down wherever you can and you'll also try to track down the releases of Kalkaska, Spy Island and the rest of the Detroit indie kids here. What more could you want from a tribute album. ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide
