Lyrics from Jazz in Paris, Vol. 2: Montmarte 1924-1939
All Music Guide Review
This three-CD box set is the second of four volumes -- each representing a quarter of the city and a chronological period -- that are designated companions to the 100 albums in the Jazz in Paris collection. Volume two covers the years 1924-1939, the so called "Golden Years" of the French scene, though the music remains very popular in the city of lights to this day. The first disc, titled the "Golden Age," begins with five burning cuts by Louis Armstrong and his band from 1934. That band included Jack Hamilton and Leslie Thomas on trumpets, as well as guitarist Maceo Jefferson and a host of French players as well. Other American jazzmen playing and recording in the city during that time included Freddy Johnson & His Harlemites, and Mitchell's Jazz Kings. The second CD in this set is entirely made up of performances of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli in their various incarnations between 1935 and 1939 mostly, though, there is a Louis Armstrong band with Grappelli from 1970. Disc three is mainly comprised of European performers, though Bill Coleman, and Dizzy Gillespie and his quintet weigh in mightily along with Gus Viseur, Alix Combelle, and Eddie Barclay. The package is lavishly illustrated, with a 60-page book featuring tons of rare photographs of the street and culture as well as musicians and clubs. There are concert programs, reproductions of record covers, and excellent liner notes, personal reminiscences from musicians, actors, directors, poets and more, footnotes -- all of them in lexicon French and English. The price is very attractive making each of these four volumes almost irresistible to historical jazz fans. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
