This three-CD box set is the third of four volumes -- each representing a quarter of the city and a chronological period -- that are designated companions to the 100 albums in the Jazz in Paris collection. Volume three covers the postwar years, 1946-'56. As such, swing had all but left the scene and had been replaced by bebop fever -- and some holdover music from the New Orleans era evidenced by Sidney Bechet's and Albert Nicholas' presence on these sides. French jazz is the mainstay on this collection with few American performances over the 54 cuts. But mainstay Bill Coleman is here as is Chet Baker, Clifford Brown, Don Byas, and Bobby Jaspar, as well as a few others. The predominance of continental jazz is marked by the appearances of Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli, Rene Thomas, the Christian Chevalier & His Orchestra, Pierre Michelot's first band, and the great Hubert Fol. The package is lavishly illustrated, with a 60-page book featuring tons of rare photographs of the street and culture as well as musicians and clubs. There are concert programs, reproductions of record covers, and excellent liner notes, personal reminiscences from musicians, actors, directors, poets and more, footnotes -- all of them in lexicon French and English. The price is very attractive, making each of these four volumes almost irresistible to historical jazz fans. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
