    All Music Guide Review

The third volume in the extraordinary After Hours series digs ever deeper into the Warner and Atlantic vaults, rediscovering grooves so rare the labels themselves no doubt forgot they even existed. That these 29 singles originated within Warner and Atlantic is both their blessing and their curse -- major-label money funded these sides, and as a result they boast nothing but the best in terms of writing, production, and craftsmanship. But on the other hand, smaller indie labels with more at stake might have given these records a greater promotional push instead of consigning them to the scrap heap when they failed to catch fire on radio. Either way, this is Northern soul at its best -- music that's rare but well done, stomping and upbeat soul that's uniquely of its era yet utterly timeless as well. Highlights include Cliff Nobles' "My Love Is Getting Stronger," the Three Degrees' "Contact," the Dynells' "Call On Me," and Linda Jones' "Last Minute Miracle." ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
