This Michael Jackson set should really be called the Essential Collection of Michael Jackson After He Left the Jackson 5 and Before He Hooked Up with Producer Quincy Jones. That would be pretty accurate. Here you get 1971's "Rockin' Robin" and 1972's "Ben (an unlikely love song to a rat) both of which were big singles, and a whole lot of stuff that feels sort of transitional. By 1979 Jackson had connected with producer Quincy Jones for the Off the Wall album and things, well, things were just different after that. In other words, save for a couple of tracks, this is hardly essential stuff. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
