Other than a little-known independent release in 1982, this Blue Note set has guitarist Stanley Jordan's recording debut. Seven selections are unaccompanied solos, with percussionist Sammy Figueroa added on some of the numbers, and there are three cuts with a rhythm section. Jordan's remarkable tapping technique (which has surprisingly not been emulated much by later guitarists and bassists) allows him to play his instrument like a piano, making most other guitarists sound one-handed. Jordan's playing sounds quite miraculous on such numbers as "Eleanor Rigby," "Freddie Freeloader," his own "Fundance," and Jimi Hendrix's "Angel." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
