G.R.R.L. is perhaps simultaneously Thaemlitz' least and most conventional recording to date. Least since it completely departs from the style of abstract experimental ambient that has concerned most of his recorded output to date, and most since G.R.R.L. is itself a kind of committed genre study of a select cross-section of recent electronic dance music history. Running the listener through a constantly shifting but utterly staid itinerary of compositional styles -- from minimal techno and drum'n'bass to '80s Chicago house and '90s garage -- Thaemlitz is clearly up to something in his often ponderously faithful renderings. What precisely that is, however, remains completely opaque through much of the recording (save, perhaps, for "China Doll," an odd vocal techno rant which also lends its concept to the album's Thaemlitz-penned liner notes). ~ Sean Cooper, All Music Guide
