    All Music Guide Review

Like its predecessor, VH1 8-Track Flashback: One-Hit Wonders, VH1 8-Track Flashback: Classic '70s Soul is a compilation that distills several of Rhino's multi-volume series -- this time, Didn't It Blow Your Mind: Soul Hits of the '70s and In Yo Face: The Roots of Funk -- to a single-disc compilation. A few of these songs, such as the Jackson Five's "Never Can Say Goodbye" and the Temptations' "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," weren't on either series, but the majority of the 15 tracks have been on other Rhino discs, and while that doesn't necessarily make the comp unnecessary, it's nevertheless frustrating to collectors who already own the multi-volume series. On its own terms, it's pretty entertaining, featuring such classics as "Get Up (I Feel Like Being Like A) Sex Machine," "Tear the Roof Off the Sucker (Give Up the Funk)," "Fire," "I'll Be Around," "Midnight Train to Georgia," "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe," "Ain't No Woman (Like the One I've Got)" and "Betcha By Golly, Wow." In fact, it's a better, more consistent collection than One-Hit Wonders, capturing the feeling of the era as well as some of its best sounds, which makes it ideal for casual fans of '70s soul and funk. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
