    All Music Guide Review

This collector's LP contains some very obscure but worthy performances. Dick McDonough has a couple of hot chordal-based guitar solos from 1934 ("Chasing a Buck" and "Honeysuckle Rose") and duets with bassist Artie Bernstein on "The Ramble." The other dozen selections (not listed in most discographies) feature a 1937 big band that includes Adrian Rollini on bass sax and vibes, two vocals by Barry McKinley, and both McDonough and Carl Kress on guitars. Virtually every selection by the orchestra has short solos from both acoustic guitarists, and since they were the pacesetters of the era (aside from Django Reinhardt), and guitarists rarely had opportunities to solo during the period in this setting, the performances are quite unique. Highly recommended to swing and pre-bop guitar collectors. Hopefully, this rare music will be reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
