Not the hits collection listeners may think it is, Jean Knight's The Very Best of Me is instead one of her late-period works for the Aim label. Opening with a workmanlike version of her lone hit, "Mr. Big Stuff," she later reprises another of her hits, "My Toot Toot," and turns in solid versions of a few Southern soul standards: "Precious, Precious," "Make Me Yours," and "Rocking Chair." Though she often treads familiar ground, Knight is in good voice for this 11-track set and the production is surprisingly solid as well. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
