Not to be confused with the similarly titled Breakbeat Massive (which was also packaged in a nifty tin box), although confusing the two wouldn't be a disaster -- both compile tracks from Britain's Labello Blanco label and feature some of the finest in "hard" jungle and drum'n'bass from the early 1990s, when jungle was just emerging as a phenomenon in British dance halls. Combining as it does the vocal approach of ragga (another term for modern dancehall reggae, especially as practiced in England) with the chilly ambience of techno and double-speed, hip-hop-derived drum samples (or "breakbeats"), jungle is a uniquely compelling dance music form, one which has quietly taken over the club scene since its emergence in the early 1990s. If there's any difference between this compilation and Breakbeat Massive, it's that this one focuses more on primarily instrumental drum'n'bass, with tracks such as "Roll On" by Andy C. and "Super Hero" by the House Crew. But there are also some great songs, including DRS and Kenny Ken's "Everyman," a junglified singer/DJ combo based on a vintage reggae groove. DJ Rap's "Intelligent Woman" is another highlight track, a complex pastiche of East Indian percussion, jungle beats, and expert reggae chatting. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
