    All Music Guide Review

As an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning popularity of big beat techno in the U.S., Big Beat Conspiracy, Vol. 1 isn't bad at all. There are some weak moments -- almost all from artists like Sniper, Environmental Science, Psychedelia Smith, Surreal Madrid, Hardknox, and Laidback, who are only featured on the U.S. version of the compilation -- but there are some great cuts from Fatboy Slim ("Give the Pop Man a Break"), Jedi Knights ("Catch the Break"), Underworld ("Rez"), Bentley Rhythm Ace ("Midlander"), the Charlatans (the Chemical Brothers' remix of "Nine Acre Dust"), and St. Etienne (Death in Vegas' "People Get Ready"). Even if there are some problems with the record, it's a good sampling of the sound and a nice introduction for the curious, even if the Chemical Brothers' Dig Your Own Hole and Exit Planet Dust are better introductions. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
