    All Music Guide Review

    The soundtrack to Robert Redford's sweeping rural romance The Horse Whisperer is an excellent collection of contemporary country. The album favors alt-country singer/songwriters like Gillian Welch, Don Edwards, Steve Earle, Iris DeMent, Allison Moorer, Emmylou Harris, and Lucinda Williams, but in this context, it becomes clear that such mainstream stars as Dwight Yoakam, the Mavericks, and George Strait build from the same tradition. As a matter of fact, it's refreshing to hear the borders break down between the two extremes, since it reveals that aesthetically, they're not that far apart. But the real treat with The Horse Whisperer is the fact that none of the 12 tracks is weak. It's the rare soundtrack that works just as well as an individual album as it does a movie souvenir. ~ Thom Owens, All Music Guide
