All Music Guide Review
The titles of compilations often exaggerate the contents, but a name like No. 1 Hits of the 70's is easily quantifiable; it can be verified by a quick glance at a chart book. And such research indicates the blatant falsehood at work here. In fact, of these 12 tracks, only four hit number one on a national chart, and several didn't even make the Top Ten. What listeners have here are 12 Top 40 hits of the 1970s released on labels that ended up in the Polygram vaults. They are all pop/rock tracks, with some leaning toward hard rock (Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "Let It Ride") and others toward disco (Andy Gibb's "Shadow Dancing"). There are one-hit-wonder novelties like R. Dean Taylor's "Indiana Wants Me" and songs by long-lived groups, such as the Moody Blues' "Question." The song selection and sequencing seem more or less random, though it's a cute idea to follow a song called "Get Ready" with one called "Yes, I'm Ready." Potential buyers are advised to look over the song list, consider the discount price, and make their own decisions. But no one should take the title seriously, and Rebound Records should be cited for a truth-in-packaging violation. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
