    All Music Guide Review

If the titles are taken seriously, Rebound's Roots of Rock series asserts that rock began in the early '70s, and while it can be argued that that's when "rock," as opposed to "rock & roll," was born, it's still a silly conceit. The damned thing is, the discs are really good budget-line discs, despite their titles. For instance, Roots of Rock: Southern Rock contains 12 (ten on cassette) Southern rock classics, including the Allman Brothers' "Whipping Post," Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird," Little Feat's "Dixie Chicken," Black Oak Arkansas' "Jim Dandy," Wet Willie's "Dixie Rock," the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' "Jackie Blue" and 38 Special's "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys." It's a representative, entertaining snapshot of the genre that features many of its major artists -- and that's not something that can be said of most budget-line compilations, either. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
