Recorded live at a Manhattan Beach restaurant, this fine LP gives one a good idea how pianist Jimmy Rowles sounded playing a trio gig. Teamed up with the supportive bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Donald Bailey, Rowles performs his usual, typically offbeat repertoire of the period. Rowles had a sly and eccentric, yet charming singing style, as he displays on "Do You Know Why Stars Come Out at Night" (an otherwise forgotten Ray Noble tune) and his own "The Ballad of Thelonious Monk." The nine instrumentals also cover a lot of area, from Wayne Shorter's "Devil's Island" to "Limehouse Blues" and "Humoresque." Rowles, who always had the knack for picking out the perfect chord for the right spot, displays both his subtlety and his solid sense of swing during the timeless performances. When will the music on this LP finally be reissued on CD? ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
