Elvis Costello

Part three in a series of four EPs, this may contain the most experimental tracks. "Distorted Angel" remains the album version and "Almost Ideal Eyes" appears on all four EPs, but track three is a cover of Costello's "All This Useless Beauty" by Lush, called in by Costello to record for this release. The band doesn't stray too far from the original arrangement, but one supposes Lush fans will like it. DJ Food's two remixes of "Little Atoms" mark the first time Costello had actively participated in commissioning remixes for his work. There of course had been some obligatory remixes of his singles back around the time of 1982's Punch the Clock and 1983's Goodbye Cruel World, but nothing Costello had wanted to acknowledge. On the "Rinse" mix, DJ Food provides some big beat loops for Costello's verses, doubling Steve Nieve's sequenced synths, then letting the vocals go and delving in the mix for six more minutes. The piano and tremelo guitar-led "Polished Glass" mix is even more ambient and puts Costello's voice through several distorting treatments. ~ Ted Mills, All Music Guide
