Recorded in 1954, a year that renowned archivist/ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax described as one of the happiest of his life, the Italian Treasury recordings were the first to document old-world/rural Italy in a field setting. Lombardia, a northern region that borders Switzerland, is the second most populous area -- next to Rome -- and is rich in farmland and tradition. Lomax once again captures the beautiful polyphony of the region, but manages to attract enough panpipe and bird call masters to break up the spirited yet often monotonous singing. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide
